Essential Information for Proper Birdhouse Designs
If you are an avid bird watcher than you know the plight of the birds the past 10 years or so with the real estate boom. More and more wooded areas and forest have been destroyed to make room for subdivisions and shopping malls. Our little feathered friend has been put into a pickle looking for nesting areas. Birds eat pesky insects and are a joy to watch, so building a nice house for them seems like a small favor.
Making a Bird House is one of the easiest of all wookworking projects, and one of the most popular. You don’t need alot of skill with wood tools to Build A Bird House, but you will need a plan. But choosing the correct birdhouse designs is important depending on the birds in your neighborhood.
All birds are looking for a safe and dry place to nest. Your job is to determine which species of bird you want to build your bird house for. Over the years alot of research has been done in this area and you can find a wide assortment of Bird House Plans. Each species has its own quirks as to size of the area of the house and the size of the entrance hole. This information is critical.
If you build it too big or too small your bird house will go without any tenants. Birds are accustomed to hollowed out logs or trees and a certain size. You should try to match that size to your bird. Most birds are single compartment occupiers. I mean one pair of birds per bird house. There are some birds that will share or love being in one giant bird house, but that is not the majority. There are even some birds that won’t live in an enclosed area. All they require is a roof and a floor.
Once you have done your research and decided which species of bird you are going to build for you need to know the minimal requirements that will make the bird feel safe. You are building a house that will also be used for nesting and raising its young. Making it a dry and well ventilated area is a must. Not only must air move through The Bird House but you must also have drainage for the floor.
The entrance hole is of utmost importance. Birds are particular about this and it must be big enough for the bird but small enough to keep out predators. The location of the hole in relation to the floor is also important. The babies can’t be so close to the hole that they could be pulled out or even fall out.
You will find that the majority of birds prefer the closed type of bird house. So 4 walls and a roof and a floor, with the roof being such that rain water will run off of it. The roof should over-hang the walls so that you can drill ventilation holes under the eaves. Without proper ventilation your birds could dry from the heat in the summer months. Also the drain hole or holes in the floor to let water and waste escape.
If there isn’t proper drainage the water can become stagnate. This will be a breeding ground for disease and bacteria, so make sure you remember a drain hole. Another interesting thing that I have discovered is that the perch is not necessary. In fact, it can be harmful to the birds by allowing predators to use it to get into the bird house. Most birds don’t require a perch, they can easily land on the entrance hole.
As I said earlier the entrance hole should only be big enough for the particular species of bird you are building the house for. Too big and predators like mice and squirrels and other small mammals will get in. Same for the perch. Without it most predators could never reach the entrance hole. Depending on your area though, you may have to put a predator guard near the entrance.
