An innovation in lifting solutions was used to build The Birds Nest in Beijing
An innovation in lifting solutions, namely scissor lift design has been openly spoken about for the first time, since the engineering project was completed in Beijing back in 2008.
Three years ago, an 11,625 square-foot stage platform which would later be the main staging area of the Olympic Games in Beijing was designed and built. The event organisers wanted the surface of the platform, which was where athletes took part in the various competitions which took place, to be a lift. To complete these challenging specifications, around 50% of the floor was made up of a staggering 13 independent scissor lifts.
From a technical point of view, this proved to be a particularly challenging project as between the 13 lifts they had to lift a weight of 600 tons, up 7 meters off the ground. The mobile scissor lifts were in fact double scissor lifts, and because they were placed alongside one another it had to be absolutely certain that they were stable, and did not wobble under the heavy load.
More recently, the impressive and unique stadium played host to Rush Hour star Jackie Chan, as well as a number of Chinese pop stars. Though Chan is famed for his unique action humour, he has also dabbled in singing too- singing on stage with other stars at the 2008 opening and closing ceremonies.
The Birds Nest, which is where the 2008 Olympics opening and closing ceremonies, in addition to some of the competitive events were held, has a 91,000-capacity. It was around 75% full when Chan recently took to the famous stage, where there was no mention of the remarks he had recently made on a business forum. These comments revealed how he thought that freedom may not be good for the Chinese population- which has been viewed by critics as an insult to the people of China.
Chan sang the song “Descendants of the Dragon”, while other performers who took to the stage included Jonathan Lee and Hong Kong’s Emil Chau, Alan Tam, Joey Yung and Hacken Lee. The performance was scheduled to coincide with China’s May 1-3 Labor Day national holiday, and is the first major event which has been held at the Bird’s Nest since the Olympics closing ceremonies.
